Pope: Merry Christmas to all! Except gays.

The always charming Pope Benedict XVI decided to use the Christmas season to air some of his views on global warming and homosexuality. The upshot: “yeah, the destruction of our habitat is a bummer, but it’s just as much of a bummer that there are all these freakin’ sodomites running around!!”

Merry Christmas to you too, you old grouch!

In a strongly worded post entitled “Pope misuses science to attack homosexuality,” the SHORT SHARP SCIENCE blog puts the artist formerly known as Cardinal Ratzinger on blast:

Call it a message of ill-will for the holiday season. Pope Benedict said on Monday that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour was just as important as saving the rainforest from destruction.

The pope said in a holiday address to the Curia, the Vatican’s central administration: “The tropical forests do deserve our protection. But man, as a creature, does not deserve any less.”

Benedict particularly attacked gender theories, which he said “lead towards the definitive emancipation of man from creation and the creator”. Being anything other than heterosexual, apparently, is threatening humanity.

In a bizarre misunderstanding of science, he went on: “[The church] must defend not only the earth, water and air as gifts of creation that belong to all. It must also defend the human person against its own destruction. What’s needed is something like a ‘human ecology,’ understood in the right sense. It’s not simply an outdated metaphysics if the church speaks of the nature of the human person as man and woman, and asks that this order of creation be respected.”

Understood in the right sense? What he really means is, “understood in a religious sense, with religious values imposed upon it” – not in the sense that professional ecologists would understand it.

Card Ratz is a wicked smart dude, so his argument has a touch more sophistication than those of the drooling “Not Adam and Steve!!!” morons you usually see espousing this bigoted philosophy.

That doesn’t make it any more valid, however.

Funnily enough, the cultural and social explanations of sexuality that Pope Benedict attacks when he criticises gender theory seem irrelevant when you look at genetics and neuroscience.

For example, genetic evidence suggesting that sexual orientation is “hard-wired” before birth is growing. The idea that homosexuality evolves by natural selection is also well supported. And the Catholic Church would no doubt wish it wasn’t true, but homosexuality is widespread in other animals too.

This all strongly suggests that it is an outdated metaphysics to insist on “the nature of the human person as man and woman”.

Ecologists and other scientists should complain… Neither science nor religion stand to gain by taking scientific labels such as “ecology” and misusing them to dress up outdated ideas.

Nor do we see the merits of pissing off every environmentalist, ecologist, biologist and gay person at Christmastime.

We are just going to have to disagree with the Pope on what he calls “anarchic freedom.”

He might be against that, but we say: Anarchy + Freedom = BRING IT ON!!!
