FOTI #11: Olympic Dongs

Fortnight on the Internets goes for the gold!

In this episode, we discuss “The Story of Jess and Russ,” a wedding website created by two very talented graphic artists that managed to enrage half the internet and get all our Likers talking;, a Chrome browser extension that promises to replace all the baby photos overwhelming your Facebook feed with photos of cats, memes, galaxies or anything else you’d prefer to gaze upon; and the closest thing to “Double Rainbow” since Yosemitebear jizzed in his pants, the video simply entitled, “This man really loves his trains.” Liker slash correspondent Jeni Sue joins us to talk about the XXX Summer Olympiad. Plus music, or should I say RIDDIMS, from Dre Skull, and more great items from our Likers.

Four ways to listen:

If you subscribe or become a Liker, you’ll be able to get to new episodes faster than everyone else (in this case, the episode was pre-released last night). We’ve also continued our tradition of leaking out the topics on our @FOTIpod Twitter account before the blog post goes up, so you can check out all the sites and links before you hear the discussion, if being fully-informed is your thing.

To the links! The tweets we posted earlier are below — plus bonus links.

I’m not sure the audio clip we included really does this masterpiece justice, so be sure to check out this video. Hopefully this doesn’t offend any of our dear Likers who have been known to court the ocean’s spray. All in good fun, sailors!

Internet Report Card

We go deep into the website that’s sparked discussion among the Likers like no item before. The consensus seemed to be that these people are really good at their jobs, and good for them for finding love, but their “story” goes on for WAY too long and resembles something the heroine would see at the beginning of a romcom to send her into an ice cream sadness spiral. Is this whole thing overcompensation for lack of a meet cute? Or are we total assholes for even commenting on this? All angles are explored!

Here’s Drew Magary’s incandescent Gawker takedown. The sly, indirect assault by The Onion, pointed out to us by Liker Georgia. And more from the truly talented Jessica Hische.

It’s a brilliant concept. And it’s gotten a ton of press. The only problem is that we couldn’t for the life of us get it to work! Anyone figure this thing out yet?

Egg on our faces! We didn’t realize this video we got from Liker Chad was a parody of an earlier foamer-tape (“foamers” are apparently railroad fanatics) until after we recorded the podcast.

Here’s the REAL man who loves trains:

Our Musical Guest

This episode features amazing riddims from Dre Skull and Mixpak Records. (Don’t know what a riddim is? We got you with a full explanation by Alpine, with Alison trying to contain her laughter every time he utters Jamaican slang…)

If you liked Dre Skull’s work on the Vybz Kartel record we featured a few episodes back — and you’re in need of help if you didn’t — you will enjoy his summer riddims, the Loudspeaker Riddim and the Kling Klang Riddim. Check ’em out on Spotify, download on iTunes…even record your own track to one of these riddims if you think you’ve got what it takes!

And to get more great music, including Dre’s work on the upcoming SNOOP LION record that the entire Internet is talking about, follow him on Facebook and Twitter.

(For more on the Diwali Riddim, as mentioned by Alpine in this segment, see this Wikipedia page.)

Internet Challenge Surprise!

Two amazing music videos that will baffle and amuse.

Just TRY not to get that stuck in your head. Good luck!

Here’s the video in question:

More on Timati, the star of this video. And here’s his track paying homage to California. One world love through hip hop!

Jeni Sue Reports from London

We have our star correspondent Jeni Sue on the scene reporting from the London Olympic Games! Yes, she was really there. What do you mean, how can she have opinions on NBC’s coverage if she was actually in London? La la la, I can’t hear you.

Some of the topics we hit upon in our free-flowing convo — and some others we couldn’t get to —  are found below.

Shoutout to the Likers!

Some great items from our Likers this fortnight…

Thanks for listening! We’ll be back in 2 weeks with Episode 12!

Theme song by Snowplows.
Cover art by Vicious Rumors.
Special thanks to Dre Skull and Mixpak Records for musical assistance!

About Alpine McGregor
Just like you, man. I got the shotgun, you got the briefcase. All in the game, though, right?
