Report Card

We bounce back from last week’s meh report card in a big way with a fortnight packed with great viral items.

#1. 10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman

Otherwise known as “the catcall video.” This video by activist group Hollaback became a massive viral hit, shared everywhere and racking up millions upon millions of views. Funny or Die quickly responded with a pretty solid comedy takeoff. But then perceptive critics asked, Is It Racist?

#2. World Series Game Seven

It was a great ballgame — congrats to the Giants and all our SF Likers on their championship — but the top viral items had nothing to do with the game itself.

First, the worst “God Bless America” that our nation has ever known.

Second, the best performance by a corporate sponsor in presenting an award of all time:

Never change, #Wildeman.

#3. “Shia LaBeouf” Live!

Rob Cantor of the 29 Impressions hoax returns with this straight-up MASTERPIECE. Here’s more info on the amazing ending.

Our Musical Guest: FUTURE MONARCHS

Inbox by Gmail

We review the new blockbuster, invite-only Google product and ask — is this the next Gmail-level gamechanger, or another Google Plus? Having tried it for several days, we are optimistic that this one’s a winner. Finagle an invite and try it out ASAP!

Here’s a dude from ZDNet who claims 700 emails a day, and gave it a thumbs up. And here’s a good rundown of the features from GigaOm.

Before we begin the formal countdown, let’s shout out to a few Likers so essential that they’re practically associate producers at this point…

Liker Erinn D. made sure we ALL felt guilty about how much shade we wanted to throw on a member of our Armed Forces’ rendition of “God Bless America.”

Liker Jeff H. made some decidedly lively and impassioned contributions to our post about the video “10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman,” and even though he disclaimed that he was pretty sure he was going to come down on the “wrong side of the internet on this one,” we can assure him we appreciated hearing his point of view and the time he took to write his response posts.

Liker Neil C. and Liker Sara in NYC did a simultaneous submit of the unforgettable “Shia LaBeouf Live” music video by Rob Cantor, which hath redeemed Cantor in our internets eyes!

And we cannot leave out Liker Cara H., without whom we would not have the likes of our tiny yet powerful ICS Maximus Thor in our world…


#5: Liker C. Dave introduced us to the latest bizarre animated magic from Adult Swim: “Mike Tyson Mysteries.” And if you’re wondering, what on earth could THAT show be, well, it’s obviously about Mike Tyson, his adopted daughter, a friendly ghost, and an alcoholic pigeon solving mysteries starring the vocal stylings of LITERALLY MIKE TYSON, as well as Jim Rash, and Norm MacDonald. Liker C Dave specifically shared with us an episode called “The End,” described as: “Cormac McCarthy’s latest novel is unfinished and for some reason he turns to Mike Tyson to help him find the ending. But just as Mike settles in to tackle some of that dense, unflinching McCarthy prose, a Chupacabra attacks! Mike puts down the book and puts up his fists. Buenas noches, Senor Chupacabra.”

#4: Liker Derick A. was one of the first to flag the now viral fake Twitter feed belonging to the overprotective and yet also overly child-empowering staff of the Los Feliz Day Care. While said day care is fake, it was inspired by a hyrbid of terrifyingly real Los Angeles area hipster child care trends and establishments observed by comedian Jason Shapiro. Let’s just say that Quinoa from My Imaginary Well-Dressed Toddler Daughter would definitely enroll there.

#3: Liker Georgia RS opened our eyes to a long overdue tumblr called “Drunk J. Crew” that points out how many of the J. Crew catalog models appropriate the same poses as whiny lushes angry at their friends for eating all the chips and dip late night, and for drunkenly spilling all their secrets. #Lightweights…Sweaters

#2: Liker Nate M. contributed TWO timely and visually arresting items this fortnight. Firstly, just in time for Halloween, he found a website that interprets both classic and modern horror masterpieces through the “neon green, pun-dripping lens” of R.L. Stine’s GOOSEBUMPS series. From “American Horror Story” to FUNNY GAMES, visitors to the site can see if their favorite nightmare-catalyst made the list! He also posted 17 absolutely incredible photos that mix STAR WARS and real life from Toronto-based photographer Thomas Dagg, which I totally ganked for the FOTI FB page.

And the Liker of the Fortnight is Liker Kim B.! She posted something this Halloween weekend that generated a TON of participation, likes and comments on the FB page: an amazing roundup of Amazon reviews for the “Delicious Women’s Ph.D. Darling Sexy” Halloween costume. To quote the site iO9 that posted it, the costume name is a “ridiculous word-salad made real by Rubie’s Costumes in New York, a company whose idea meetings may or may not involve pulling random words out of a hat. For as outstandingly awful as this costume is, its existence is more than made up for by its reviews on Amazon.”
